Inspiration and technique
My ‘Party Bears’ collection was inspired by one very special vintage teddy dressed as a Jester.
With his conical hat placed at a jaunty angle over one ear, flamboyant ruff around his neck and fetching green and red two tone harlequin tunic he cut quite a dash.
Dear reader, utterly irresistible, he totally stole my heart, I was smitten!
For the love of bears
And so began my ‘Party Bears’ range of 6 lovable characters each wearing their own colourful costume - variations on my favourite vintage jester theme.
It was such fun designing all their extravagant hats and fancy neckwear and then choosing colour combinations to suit each one of my adorable bears was super fun!
Deciding on some less common names for my bears took a lot more thought though. Romeo was a prime candidate with some other Shakespearean characters but I thought I would keep this idea for another range in the future - watch this space! Instead I settled on a real mixture, names which would be a bit easier for little ones to learn and so Pix, Widget, Jago, Bazzle, Fransy and Kola were born.
To then pick up my watercolour brush and bring each bear to life was the best bit of all and such a delight.
You may have noticed that the finished watercolour for ‘Bazzle’ bear turned out a little differently from my initial coloured pencil sketch? When all 6 sketches were complete I changed the red and blue combination to blue and light blue. The particular tone of red pencil I had used looked a bit too bright and modern amongst the other more vintage hues - what do you think?
So there’s a little of the story behind the making of my ‘Party Bears’ range.
I hope one, if not all of them is starting to melt your heart now too.
“O Romeo, Romeo…"

“When I was only four days old
You came to live with me
And gave me all the love you hold
Quite unreservedly.
Oh teddy bear I still love thee
As much as I did then,
Though now we both are forty-three
And very nearly men.”
