Inspiration and technique
I look forward to watching the Autumnal colour changes that leaves go through every year.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Canada in the Fall which is wonderful with maples all aglow but my own homeland, Cornwall, has its own particular subtle appeal for me with a multitude of beautiful golden russet tones delivered on cue by our own native trees.
Of all the trees in the wood, the Holly may ‘bear the crown’ as the Christmas carol puts it, but for me the Horse Chestnut must be up there with the very best of them. It’s such a generous giant for a start, and a great friend to the young at heart whatever their age.
Leaves were my go-to subjects for my first linocuts - distinctive shapes, lots to choose from and easy to collect especially during Autumn.
I began with simple, easily recognisable leaves including oak, sycamore and beech, then feeling a bit more confident, I progressed to the compound, palmate Horse Chestnut which I completed, life size, and then printed. I then used the leaf shape from the linocut print and produced a Drypoint etching plate and graphite version which in turn was digitised.
Wishing to celebrate this time of year in all its colourful beauty I first created a series of 6 leaves depicting end of Summer, through to Winter, with transitional phases in between.
Using various combinations I then had a lot of fun designing patterns which became my ‘Forever Autumn’ range, reminding me of throwing hand fulls of leaves up in the air and all those lovely leaf shuffling walks.
