SQUEAKY BINDERS

 CLASSIC NOTEBOOKS

To cover our ‘Classic’ Notebooks we use a range of exquisite handmade papers from Japan, Nepal and India and a quintessential marbled paper range produced and printed in the UK by Jemma Lewis.

Japanese Chiyogami Paper

Oriental symbolic patterns were inspired by stylish Kyoto ladies’ kimonos worn during the Edo Period. Originally the paper was developed as woodblock prints but now it is hand screen printed using up to 5 colours requiring a precision registration process. Its fine delicate appearance belies an innate dry and wet strength and flexibility making it eminently suited to bookbinding and box making…

Nepalese Mulberry Paper

Originating from remote villages in the Kathmandu Valley, these Lokta papers are made from the bark of a Mulberry bush. Each paper sheet is made from the pulp created by cooking the beaten bark which is then dissolved in water and formed on a screen. The sheets are dried in the sun, either vertically or at an angle, and then transported to Kathmandu where they are dyed and screen printed using Environmentally Friendly Processes and Fair Working Standards.

Printed Marbled Papers

We use a selection of designs from a stunning array of fabulous printed marbled papers produced by Jemma Lewis. We create some lovely colour combinations with our colourful bookcloths and covering papers for all of our notebooks.

 Hand Stitched Book Blocks

Our notebooks come in two sizes with a variety of contents - the usual lined and squared pages as well as a choice of pages including dots and isometric. We prick the page signatures and hand stitch them together with linen thread to create the book block, add some headbands and then case it into its cover with the addition of endpapers.
