The ‘Otter’ Range
I created three different border designs to frame my otter watercolour. I couldn’t decide which I liked best so I’ll leave it up to you to choose - or like me, have all three, send two to special friends and keep one for yourself!
Inspiration and technique
These enigmatic creatures were rarely seen when I was young and to spot one in the wild was thought very fortunate indeed.
My first encounter with an otter was the briefest of glimpses which nonetheless made a lifelong impression on me. I still remember the excitement of unexpectedly catching sight of this shy animal rapidly disappearing upstream along a Cornish riverbank.
For my ‘Underwater Otter’ design I wanted to bring to life the graceful and sinuous motion of an otter I imagined swimming amongst waterlilies and weed - playful, wild and free.
I used my design, in the ‘art nouveau’ style, to create linocut mono prints which I then developed into 6 colourful digital versions - see ‘Underwater Otter’
I then painted this watercolour version which is now available in a choice of 3 Art Cards and Postcards.
A word about my favourite watercolour materials.
I love using Winsor and Newton materials - both their pigments and brushes - for all my watercolours including my Botanical Illustrations.
My favourite paper is the luxurious 100% cotton, Saunders Waterford HP papers, mould made and acid free - lovely smooth surface and brilliant white.
By the way, I prefer tubes of paint as they last a lot longer…
